In May 2003, a dearly beloved local friend, Jayanna Enholm, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The small community of South Padre Island immediately rallied to provide support to the entire family. Jayanna’s two-income family quickly became a single income family and as finances soon became tenuous, several friends started a benefit to help the Enholms through this difficult time.
Jayanna was overjoyed at the amount of support from the community; but she insisted that the benefit be more than just about fundraising; it should be about education and promotion of breast cancer awareness to help all local residents fighting breast cancer.
Today, Walk for Women is a registered 501(c)3 organization and proud to be hosting our next Walk. Once again, we are holding a three-day event, including a casino night, a bay fishing tournament and a three-mile walk on South Padre Island. With an expected participation of close to 2000 people this year, the goal is to continue to help those in need, not only monetarily, but also with ongoing one-on-one support through the complex medical and psychosocial issues one can face with this disease.
A special note: Today, Jayanna is healthy and proud to say that she has been in remission for over 5 years
